MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

Murchison Falls National Park, the Uganda’s largest biosphere reserve located in the north of the country houses a spectacular geographic phenomenon: water from the Victoria Nile River surges through a narrow gorge in the ground that stretches about 6 meters, pushing onwards before it makes its way down a massive drop. Visitors can also a game drive from a boat along the river, spotting Hippos, Crocodiles and a variety of birds.

Kampala

Arrivals from Entebbe Aiport. Use Uber, Bolt or Safeboda to move around the city.

Buy Sim Card with data bundle. You will need a passport.

 

What to visit

Uganda National Mosque. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya commissioned the mosque as a gift to Uganda. Visitors must pay entrance tickets (included a guide tour). You will enjoy 360º panoramic at the roof of mosque.

Owino Market is one of the biggest second hand clothes market in Africa.

How to get

By bus Kampala-Pakwach. Book online tickets here. The journey takes 6-7 hours (15 EUR). In Pakwach, you will need a boda to travel to Paraa (a village inside the park). It takes 1 hours in a dirty road. Enjoy this way as you can spot a lot of wildlife. In Paraa you will take the ferry to cross the river. The ferry works from 7 am-7 pm (services AM 7, 9, 11 PM 12, 2, 4, 6, 7).

You also rent a car by local operator such as Road trip Africa.

 

What to do in Murchison Falls National Park

Boat trip to falls managed by UWA at 2 pm, 2.30 pm (30 USD). When you arrive to the falls you have the option to climb to the falls (40 minutes) but you have to pay entry fees (15 USD) and manage the pick up with a driver. Boat trip to Delta (3-4 hours) at 7 am. It costs 55 USD and takes 4-5 hours. More info here. Note that in low season there are not trips everyday.

Visit the falls by motorbike (you need to manage with a driver).  The journey takes 1-2 hours.

Red Chilli. The cheapest option in the park. Tents from 20 USD. Wildlife such as hippos or warthogs are in surroundings.

South sector: Kichumbanyoboo Gate and Bugungu Gate.

Buffaloes (lots), elephants (lots), Jackson hartebeests (lots), Antelopes (lots), Kobs (lots), Giraffes (lots), Bushbucks (lots), and Warthogs (lots), hippos (lots), crocodrile (few), zebras (lots) and 451 bird species.

Jinja, Nile

Explorer where the Nile born doing rafting in its white streams. There are some local operators which manage the trip from Kampala, provide equipment, meals and leave you again in Kampala.

​

Adrift Rafting. Best price in Jinja (with discount for EA residents). Price from 90 USD. A full day rafting starts at 6 am in Kampala Serena (meeting point). Bus pick you up and transfer to Jinja offices (1 hour). After registration, you will move to Jinja shores. Rafting takes 5-6 hours including level 5 rafting and a BBQ in a fruit bat island in the middle of Nile. At 3 pm you will come back to Kampala. Bear in mind traffic in Kampala is a nightmare!

Note: Book in advance as in low season there is not rafting trips everyday. Rafting is safe although is a area where live crocodiles.
