Danakil Depression
The Danakil Depression is one of the most inhospitable regions of the world, but is nonetheless spectacular, full of eye-catching colors, as in the sulphur springs. The desert has several points lying more than 100 meters (328 ft) below sea level. Discover the Afar region, its villages and salt industry characterized by long camel caravans.
The climate is really warm with high humidity. Make sure you bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for the day.
Danakil is a safe area although tours travel in convoy and it is prerequisite to have security when visiting the Danakil. As a consequence, visitors must arrange the trip through a local operator tour. They offer different packages depends on the time availability of the visitor. Visitors can add a visit to Erta Ale, however, since the eruption of 2017 the famous lava lake has dropped so far and isn't visible any longer. Prices varies from 150 USD to 250 depends on number of days.
Mobile coverage is now available in the camping site of Hamedela village, Dallol area and on the road between Hamedela to Ertale volcano.

DAY 1 Mekele - Hamed Ela via Berhale - Lake Assal
They pick you up 7.am in your hotel in Mekele for the meeting point in their offices .
Visitors will pass through a small town of Berhale where the camel caravan stop before they proceed to the northern highlands. En route you might see long camel caravans coming to the salt mine and others going out of the Danakil with their salt loaded camels. Visitors also pass through Ragad (Asebo), the place where the localities are mining salt. Look the activity of breaking the salt from the ground, cutting in to rectangular pieces and loading on camels. Bear in mind to avoid Ethiopian holidays if you want to see them. Visit and have a warm bath near the Salt Mountain. Finally, sun set at Lake Assal with a bottle of wine and Over night camping at Hamed Ela.
DAY 2 Hamed Ela - Dallol - Mekele
Visitors drive ahead to Dallol and visit the difference landscape formed by volcanic activityn(116 meter below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) colorful salts mining, Drive back to to Mekele. Arrival at 16.00 pm. ETT can also transfer visitors to airport.
